Luxembourg is the 6th happiest country in the world

Luxembourg is up two places from 2021 and ranks 6th among the happiest countries in the world. Its high ranking is due in part to the country’s strong GDP performance and high levels of freedom and life expectancy.

Measuring happiness is not an easy task. The World happiness Report 2022 takes a number of factors into account and declares Finland to be the happiest country in the world – a position the Nordic country has held for 5 consecutive years. It is followed by Denmark, Iceland, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Luxembourg.

Strong GDP performance

Luxembourg ranks 1st in the world in terms of GDP per capita, which is the individual factor with the strongest influence on the country’s place among the 10 happiest countries in the world. It also ranks 10th in the freedom people feel to make life choices, and 12th in life expectancy, among the 146 countries covered by the study.

Luxembourg ranks 33rd for social support (people’s perception of whether or not they can count on their loved ones in case of difficulties) and 34th for generosity, i.e. the proportion of people giving money to charity. In the area of corruption – the only category where a higher score is better than a lower score – Luxembourg ranks 130th.
